Gonadorelin
Overview
Gonadorelin is a synthetic form of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as LHRH, the hypothalamic decapeptide that sits at the top of the reproductive axis. Its identity to the native hormone gives it a well-defined pharmacology and makes it a natural reference material in neuroendocrine and reproductive research.
Gonadorelin acts as an agonist at pituitary GnRH receptors. Delivered in pulses, it has been studied for driving physiologic release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), while continuous stimulation instead downregulates the receptor, a contrast that has made it a useful probe of receptor dynamics. It has recognized clinical applications, including evaluation of pituitary gonadotropin function and, in pulsatile delivery, induction of ovulation in the setting of hypothalamic amenorrhea.
